Homeschool – Why Am I Doing This?

Someone once said, “If you’re not sure where you’re going, any train will get you there.”

Recently I took a train trip to New York City. I knew where I was going and what train to use to get there. I had a specific destination. I even had a specific destination, my hotel, once I arrived in the City. Here’s where my plan fell apart: Once I left the train, I had no idea how to get out of Penn Station to get to the street or even which street I needed to exit to. I had not thought through all the steps of my travel plan. I knew where I was going; I didn’t know which door would take me there.

Far too often we have wonderful plans for our homeschool. We know our destination. The goal is to teach our children. But somewhere we haven’t figured out what that really means. We’re unsure of which door will take us there because we are vague about where there is.

Standing in the middle of Penn Station not knowing which way to go was disconcerting and discouraging. I finally used the GPS on my phone to find the appropriate path out of the building.

It’s easy to be discouraged and even befuddled when we’re standing in the middle of our homeschool day not knowing how to move forward. Yes, math facts, writing sentences correctly, knowing what years the Civil War was fought are all stops along the way. How do we know if we’re on the right train if we haven’t laid out our plan?

I don’t mean daily or weekly lesson plans and mean the ultimate plan: What is the ultimate goal of homeschooling? Or, why are we homeschooling? That’s the question we need to answer.

Hop on over to The Character Corner and read my story of “Why Am I Doing This?” as part of 30 Days of Homeschool Encouragement and Inspiration. (Pssttt … enter the giveaway while you’re there.)
